A climate awareness programme. We developed and ran six education sessions on climate change for three groups of participants: disabled adults at IDEA Services day programmes at Bentley St and Queen St and disabled students in the Supported Learning Centre at Wairarapa College. The sessions utilised hands-on learning kits provided by House of Science. The topics included weather, climate, heating, water, waste and energy/fossil fuels. We included trips to the Waipoua River to investigate risks from flooding, to the Masterton Transfer Station to see how waste is recycled, and to an IDEA Services house to workshop climate resilience strategies in the home. As part of the programme, we also ran a coffee ground collection service to reduce the amount of organic waste going to landfill. This project was funded by the Masterton District Council Community Climate Fund.
